UNIFY CORPORATION SIGNS DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT WITH CHINA'S MINISTRY OF LIGHT INDUSTRY

Company's breakthrough software licensing and registration program yields third agreement with ministries and administrations within the PRC

SAN JOSE, Calif., September 25, 1996 -- Unify Corporation (NASDAQ: UNFY), a leading provider of client/server software solutions for the development, deployment, and management of high-end, business critical applications for intranets and the Internet, today announced that the Company has signed a master distribution agreement with the Ministry of Light Industry, a central government ministry within the People's Republic of China (PRC). The agreement -- the third between Unify and PRC organizations -- was reached during last week's Department of Commerce-organized three-day trade mission to China.

Under terms of the agreement, the Ministry of Light Industry will register previously unlicensed Unify software and, through a pre-paid license, distribute Unify VISION and VISION/WEB to organizations within the Ministry. Unify had previously signed agreements with the Shanghai Architectural Association and XinHua News Agency.

"I am pleased to see that leading companies like Unify are seeing concrete progress in selling and licensing legitimate software to China," said Mickey Kantor, U.S. Secretary of Commerce. "This Administration is committed not only to ensuring that U.S. intellectual property rights are protected but also to supporting U.S. companies like Unify increase exports to China."

"The agreement with the Ministry of Light Industry was reached in an environment of cooperation," said Reza Mikailli, president and CEO of Unify Corporation. "The agreements demonstrate our long-term commitment to provide technologically advanced products that will help China further develop its information technology infrastructure. As we continue to strengthen our relationship with the Chinese government, we believe the progress that Unify is making will be leveraged by other U.S. companies doing business in China."

Working with various PRC ministries and administrations, and in consultation with the U.S. Department of Commerce, Unify recently announced a software registration program under which software users in the PRC can register their previously unlicensed software.
